ASME SB165 UNS N04400 (Monel 400) seamless tube is a high-performance material for heat exchangers requiring exceptional resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and non‑oxidizing chemicals. Its combination of strength, ductility, thermal conductivity, and resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking makes it a preferred choice in marine, chemical, and oil & gas industries where 316L or copper alloys would fail prematurely.

How It Works – Monel 400 Tube in a Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger

Basic function: Transfers heat between two fluids without mixing them.

  • Tube side fluid (corrosive, e.g., seawater, chemical solution) flows inside the Monel tube.

  • Shell side fluid (e.g., cooling water, steam, hydrocarbon) flows outside the tube bundle.

  • Monel 400 provides a corrosion-resistant barrier, preventing tube wall thinning, pitting, or cracking over years of service.

 

 

Application

  • Heat exchangers & condensers – Seawater cooling, chemical plants, refineries

  • Marine engineering – Shipboard coolers, offshore produced water coolers

  • Desalination plants – Brine heaters, evaporator tubes

  • Chemical processing – HF service, sulfuric acid alkylation, chlorinated solvent handling

  • Oil & gas – Sour service (with NACE limitations – H₂S requires careful evaluation)

  • Cryogenic equipment – Retains ductility down to liquid hydrogen temperatures (-253°C / -423°F)
